The Fraser Shield Camping Competition
The Fraser Shield
The Fraser Shield, as far as we are aware, is the oldest camping competition still being run in Scouting. From the first competition in 1912, through to today, generations of Scouts have competed against each other in patrols to win the coveted trophy.

The competition serves to test the ability of the patrol to work together as a team and to ‘survive’ for a weekend maintaining high standards of camping, cooking and cleanliness. It is a great honour for any Troop/Patrol to win the trophy, the hard work and level of skill necessary to achieve it is appreciated by anyone who has ever taken part in the competition.

It now appears that the first eight plaques were affixed to the shield and engraved each time it was won, these were then rearranged and six more added in 1936. This makes it rather difficult to date the early photographs.

Most of the early facts have been confirmed by more than one “memory” or written evidence, the majority of which was gleaned from back issues of the Market Harborough Mail who have been faithfully recording Scouting events from the beginning.

Many thanks to all the people who have helped in the compilation of these records so far, with their photographs and reminiscences. This website has been built to give others a chance to see what it is all about.

If you have any memories, photographs or memorabilia of the Fraser Shield we would be happy to share them on these pages.
